Children and Families Services

CCDHH assists deaf and hard of hearing children and their families as they explore opportunities to enhance communication and social skills. The Center continues to ensure that members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community have equal access to medical, legal and business services. Services are tailored to meet the interests of the family/caregivers and are held at the Center, in the home or school environment.

General services are provided along with--

Family Support: Staff provides support to family members through guidance and instruction in order to foster independence, self-advocacy, and increased social skills. Sessions emphasize a free exchange of ideas and practical methods, assistance with educational planning and advice on advocacy issues.

Communications Strategies: Sign language classes and speech services advance language development and communication skills connecting deaf and hard of hearing individuals to the hearing community.

Workshops: Sessions are designed to build self-esteem in adolescents and independent living skills in deaf and hard of hearing young adults. Examples of workshops include: “Educational Experiences from a Deaf Perspective”; “A Crash Course in Deaf Culture”; and “Growing Up with a Hearing Loss.” Hearing loss awareness is presented upon request by staff visiting local libraries, schools, and community organizations.

Play Groups/Youth Gatherings/Summer Camp: In addition to summer camp, we organize play groups and youth gatherings throughout the year to provide parents a network of support and children/young adults (ages 0-17) the opportunity to socialize with their peers.

Tutoring Services: After school tutoring services are provided at a location convenient to the student/family. This service supplements the child’s learning and educational needs by working to close academic deficits.

Services are tailored to meet the interests of the family and are provided at the Center, home, school and/or other locations.
