Communication Choices
Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) - VRI is a fee-based interpreting service conveyed via videoconferencing where at least one person, typically the interpreter, is at a separate location. VRI uses video technology to bring professional interpreting to settings where having a live interpreter present in the room is not essential. VRI sessions use sign language interpreters to expedite the communication process. Access is available using a computer, laptop, or mobile device with a webcam.
On-site Interpreting - Sign language interpreting is a highly specialized field. The professional sign language interpreter is able to adjust to a broad range of deaf consumer preferences and/or need for interpretation. The interpreter facilitates the communication process between the deaf consumer and the hearing individual in a variety of settings such as medical, legal and public meetings. The interpreter converts the spoken word to sign language for the deaf individual and sign language back to the spoken word for the hearing individual. Interpreting requires not only the translation of words, but of concepts and ideas. Understanding the subject matter is essential for the information to be conveyed accurately.
CART (Communication Access Real time Translation) - Real-time captions are created as an event takes place. A CART provider (often trained as a court reporter or stenographer) uses a stenotype machine with a phonetic keyboard and special software. A computer translates the phonetic symbols into English captions almost instantaneously. Real-time captioning can be used for programs that have no script; live events, including governmental proceedings; news programs; and non-broadcast meetings.
Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) – A CDI is an individual who is deaf or hard of hearing and has been certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf as an interpreter. In addition to excellent communication skills and interpreter training, the CDI may also have specialized training and/or experience in use of gesture, mime, props, drawings and other tools to enhance communication. The CDI has an extensive knowledge and understanding of deafness, the deaf community, and/or Deaf culture which can bring added expertise into booth routine and uniquely difficult interpreting situations.
Support Service Provider (SSP) - SSPs are specially trained professionals who enable people who have combined vision and hearing losses to access their environments and make informed decisions. SSPs provide them with visual and environmental information, sighted guide services, and communication accessibility.
Video Relay Service (VRS) - VRS allows deaf and hard of hearing individuals to make and receive telephone calls to/from any hearing person. Using a real-time video connection to an interpreter (through a TV, PC, or tablet), the deaf or hard of hearing individual uses the interpreter to relay the conversation between themselves and the hearing person on the other end of the call. Deaf individuals can call the doctor, a neighbor, a plumber, the family, order pizza or call any hearing person using VRS – and/or have any hearing person call them. Interpreting is done in real-time with complete confidentiality.
